Upper Dolpo trekking an adventure around Shey-Phoksumdo National Park covering an area of 3,555 sq. km that extends from Dolpo towards further North West at Jumla and around Mugu district making largest national park of Nepal Himalaya.

Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel.

On reaching Kathmandu international airport received by White Lotus staff/guide for short transfer in the heart of Kathmandu at Thamel area an interesting place after checking into your hotel room, meet at the hotel lobby for group briefing for Upper Dolpo Trekking with other information to make your stay in Nepal enjoyable.

The evening includes welcome dinner in authentic Nepalese restaurants with culture program of the country.

Day 02: Fly to Nepalgunj 150m and transfer to hotel.

Morning or midday fly to Nepalgunj located Far South West Nepal scenic sweeping flights of about 55 minutes to land at low warm areas at Nepalgunj city airport.

Amid airborne fabulous perspectives a scene of snow-topped mountains from the take-off in Kathmandu to landing at Nepalgunj airport, on reaching Nepalgunj airport terminal transfer to a nice hotel within its city area. Nepalgunj, situated close to Indian border of UP (Utter Pradesh), where local people traditions resemble with Indian culture and way of life.

Day 03: Fly to Juphal 2,475 m and trek to Dunai 2,140 m -04 hrs.

Morning early breakfast for short corresponding flight to arrive at Jhupal at Dolpo territory, amid these grand flight perspectives on Dhaulagiri and other western Himalaya, on coming to at Jhupal following 35-40 minutes on air where our staff and watchmen get you.

From Jhupal, subsequent to getting sorted out and after that couple of long periods of energizing jeep drive contacts you at Dunai the principle headquarter and the managerial town of an entirety Dolpa zone.

In Dunai for an overnight stop in the comfort of the nice local lodge, afternoon walk around Dunai town and observe its interesting local culture and traditional life.

Day 04: Trek to Chhekpa 2,678 m- 05hrs.

After a night in Dunai, walk leads to market area to a bridge above Thulo Bheri River, as climb leads to a ridge over Phoksumdo River valley with views of Kagmara peak. Walk then leads to long descend past farm villages and fields growing walnuts and close Dhera stream, a small cattle herders settlements and then a short climb to Rahagaon village of Thakuri a Hindu local tribe.

As walk leads to a downhill path into a forested area to reach our overnight camp at Chhepka a small farm village.

Day 05: Trek to Samduwa 3,038 m -05 hrs.

From Chhepka located close to Ankhe village, as morning walk takes to short climb and then descend into a forested area to reach a river bank, from here climb after leaving the forest. On reaching the top of a ridge with downhill to forest leading to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, trek further to Samduwa for an overnight stop near the entrance of Phoksumdo National Park.

Day 06: Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,600m / 11,808 ft -05 hrs.

Morning walk heading first to Phoksundo Lake after walking past Pungmo Khola (stream) valley, as walk follows Pungmo Khola downhill into pine and birch trees to reach upper side of Phoksumdo Khola. After a short refreshing stop continue to walk to Ringmo village, an interesting Tibetan origin village adorned with mud plastered Chorten and Mani (prayer) walls.

From here a short walk leads to Phoksundo Lake for overnight by the shore of beautiful turquoise Lake of Phoksundo.

Day 06: Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,600m / 11,808 ft -05 hrs.

A perfect spot for leisure to chill out on this free day, marvel the beauty of natural surroundings with scenic landscapes overlooking peaks of Kagmara, and explore fascinating Ringmo town and witness Dolpo local culture with its well-established heritage and custom.

Day 07: Rest and acclimatization day at Phoksundo Lake.

A perfect spot for rest day around scenic spot within a beautiful lake, with time for short walks and hike with views of Kagmara peaks, visit interesting Ringmo village located close to the lake.

Day08: Trek to Phoksundo Khola Camp 3,750 m -05 hrs.

From here walk leads towards high Upper Dolpo area to our major destination of the adventure, as walk follows contouring around rocky ledge high over a river bank in between unsteady path. As walk leads further towards the far end of the lake past summer field which opens up into a wide valley at Phoksundo Khola (stream) for the medium-term stop what's more, outdoors by the bank of a stream.

Day 09: Trek to Low Camp 4,500 m - 05 hrs.

Morning walk starts on a fairly level path towards north past Phoksundo Khola and then walking up on hilly slopes, after a climb reaching a ridge top with grand views of the green wide valley with Kang-La pass on-route Shey Gompa, overnight camp on nice green summer pasture at Low Camp.

Day 10: Trek to Shey Gompa 4,343 m / 14,245 ft via Kang-La pass 5,350 m /17,548 ft - 06 hrs.

The morning begins with soak move to achieve our real goal at Shey Gompa also known as Crystal Monastery, as it is close to Crystal Mountain at a mere distance. From Low Camp, walk leads to a climb on stone and rocky path to reach over Nangdo-la also was known as Kang-la pass at above 5,350 m high, the highest spot of the adventure.

On the high spot rewards you with great views of landscapes with snow-peaks that include as far to Mt. Dhaulagiri. From the top of the pass descend to reach the base of a slope which prompts a stream, and after that crosswise over heading towards steers herder camps, after a short break continues walk approaching Buddhist prayer monument with Chorten and Mani.

From this nice spot a short walk to reach Shey Gompa situated at the bottom of Crystal Mountain regarded as Holy Mountain with old monastery close-by.

Day 11: Acclimatization day at Shey Gompa.

A perfect and great place for rest day around this high mountain area, where you can enjoy the harmony of nature and chanting of monks, visit Shey Monastery also known Crystal Monastery, this area is well described in the novel Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen.

Day 12: Trek to Namgung 4,360 m via Sela-la Pass 5,094 m- 06 hrs.

From Shey Gompa journey continuous heading into a wall canyon, as walk meanders atop Sela or Gela-la at 5,094 m offering grand views of landscapes and of Mt. Dhaulagiri peaks, downhill on the grazing area with a pleasant walk to Namgung Gaon for an overnight stop.

Day 13: Trek to Saldang 3,770 m -06 hrs.

After Namgung walk leads on dusty windswept country heading to a steep uphill to reach our overnight stop at Saldang, another interesting large village of the region, situated on the high side of a plateau.

Day 14: Trek to Yangtsher Gompa 4,960 m- 05 hrs.

From here, morning walk pursues stream Nang Chu right with short ups and down afterward passing Sugugaon and Dechen Lapran a steers herders settlement, and then heading to our overnight at Yangtsher Gompa near Chagoan village an interesting old Gompa of pre-Buddhist and ancient Bon-Pa culture.

Day 15: Trek to Sibu 4,560 m -05 hrs.

Morning walk heads south to Tarap valley around Tokyu and Dho Tarap village, then taking southern direction to reach at by the bank of Dachu Khola, after crossing on the same trail following the river through farm fields, and then walk into Yak herder areas for overnight at Sibu.

Day 16: Trek to Jeng La Phedi 4,900 m -06 hrs.

Having a nice pleasant stop in summer pasture area walk follows the river for a brief time, and after that experiencing yaks and donkeys loaded troop on course Tibet, exchange with Tibet exists for many years, and this strolling course lies on the old Trans Himalayan Caravan Route at the base of Jeng-la.

Day 17: Trek to Tokyu 4,240 m crossing Jeng-la pass 5,216m - 06 hrs.

Heading to cross over Jeng-la pass with a steep climb to the pass with views of Mt. Dhaulagiri range, then on long descend to the base and continue to walk to Tokyu village.

After a steep climb of the previous day, today an easy walk to reach Tokyu Gaon for medium-term, this is a standout amongst the greatest and intriguing town of Dolpo zone, comprised of in excess of ten towns and decent tended ranch fields with old cloisters.

Day 18: Trek to Dho Tarap 3,944 m - 05 hrs.

After Tokyu Gaon, morning starts downhill to Tarap Chu on a wide green valley, one of the scenic broader valley of the area, here you will notice many Sheppard’s settlements of Yaks and Sheep, as walk continues to our medium-term camp at Dho Tarap, another fascinating town of blend clans of Tibetans source and Magar slope clan individuals.

Day 19: Trek to Tarap Khola 3,800m -06 hrs.

From here a long descend to Tarap valley, one of the largest and longest valleys of Dolpo area which is about 20 k.m. which stretches following Tarap Chu River most of the way to joins with Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village, walk leads past Langa with beautiful cascading waterfalls heading due south following the trail after Sisaul and small place of Kesila around Yak herders temporary camps to reach our overnight at Tarap Khola around a small place as walk progress reaching a confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river after a long day walk of about six hours.

Day 20: Trek to Khani Gaun 3,150 m -06 hrs.

The journey leads towards the scenic valley of Tarap area, walk enters into a narrow gorge with some vegetation of bushes of juniper and wild rose, walk leads past Tol-Tol within the large overhanging cave, around this area chance of spotting some wild-life like Naur or Blue Sheep and other animals.

As walk progress reaching a confluence of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola Rivers, overnight camp at Khani Gaun by the bank of the river after a long day walk of nearly six hours or more.

Day 21: Trek to Tarakot 2,540 m -06 hrs.

The journey today leads to a nice village at Tarakot as walk starts past smaller villages and then entering into the small forest area, following a river all the way to Tarakot, this is one of the vital and vast towns of Dolpo with intriguing history houses an old historical fortress (Dzong or Kot) to guard the village against outsiders in early days.

Day 22: Trek to Dunai 2,140 m -06 hrs.

After a pleasant time at Tarakot, last day walk leads to Dunai as morning starts walking into a spread out villages and farm huts, walk on the wider path with some short tough and downhill to reach Thuli Bheri River valley and afterward at Dunai, on reaching Dunai for an overnight stop.

Day 23: Trek to Juphal 2,475m -04 hrs.

From Dunai following on the good winding trails past farm villages and forested area to reach our last and final overnight stop at Jhupal, before flying back to Kathmandu.

Day 24: Flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj and connect flight to Kathmandu.

From Jhupal morning short flight to Nepalgunj city airport, with time to get refreshed before connecting flight back Kathmandu on reaching Kathmandu transfer to your hotels.

Day 25: Contingency day in case of flight disturbance to and from Jhupal

A free and reserve day in Kathmandu in case of flight delay and cancellation at Jupal in Dolpo, which can occur sometimes even in good seasons as Himalayan weather can be unpredictable sometimes with unfavorable climate conditions for flights around mountain region.

Day 26: International Departure homeward bound or respective countries.

As per your international flight time for homeward bound or to next respective destinations, depart from the hotel where White Lotus staff transfer you to Kathmandu International airport with final farewell after a great adventure and experience on ‘Upper Dolpo Trekking’.
